Transportation & Mobility
The Town of Melbourne Beach seeks to improve sustainable transportation and mobility by emphasizing infrastructure that ensures the safety and inclusiveness of all travelers.
The Town of Melbourne Beach strives towards sustainable transportation and mobility initiatives by emphasizing infrastructure that ensures the safety and inclusiveness of all travelers, while encouraging alternatives to conventional internal combustion engine vehicles.
The Challenge
Much of our current roadway system was developed long ago, from land use decisions that predominantly accommodate single occupancy vehicular modes of travel. This has created challenges such as increased congestion, higher vehicle emissions, and unsafe road conditions for sustainable travel options like walking and biking.
The Opportunity
By providing safe bike lanes and other forms of innovations in mobility, the Town of Melbourne Beach can ensure residents have access to necessary services, while reducing automobile dependence.
Read below to learn how the Town of Melbourne Beach is working towards more sustainable methods for transportation.
1. Reduce fossil fuel consumption in transportation
The Town is identifying feasible timing to replace old town vehicles with alternative fuel vehicles, and has installed its first electric vehicle charging station near the Community Center on Ocean Avenue for public use. Additionally, multiple parking locations throughout the Town are reserved for golf carts and alternative fuel vehicles only.
2. Create safer streets for all travelers
The Town continues to install roadway safety features for foot traffic and cyclists including, crosswalk safety flags and street signage.
3. Encourage alternatives to single occupancy vehicles
In order to reduce carbon emissions and motivate healthier commuting opportunities, the Town along with local volunteers, have installed over 15 bike racks throughout the community, available at most beach accesses and waterfront parks.
