What is Sustainability?
Sustainability is commonly defined as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (Brundtland Report, 1987). In other words, practicing sustainable actions preserves the welfare of our community today as well as in the future. These actions are derived from components of the triple bottom line: environmental, economic and social capital.
Why is Sustainability Important?
The triple bottom line serves as a reminder that sustainable actions go far beyond the protection of the natural environment. We invite you to join us in these efforts of resiliency by making small, simple changes in everyday life. These decisions may consist of choosing to shop with small local businesses, utilizing clean transportation and energy, and treating others equally. By choosing to educate yourself on the importance of pollution prevention and community wellness, together we can improve the quality of life for all species and environments.
What is the Town’s Mission for Sustainability?
Being a coastal town in a rapidly growing county, natural resources in Melbourne Beach are especially threatened by population growth from the north, south and west, and by natural occurrences that cause flooding. We must look within our Town and to the adjacent communities in finding solutions to sustainability concerns. Since 1992, the Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) has worked closely with the Town’s commission and staff in a commitment to the preservation and protection of the environment as it relates to the health of the community. The Town is committed to enriching our Town for current and future generations through the completion of strategic projects outlined in the Guidelines for Sustainability Actions (GSA) document. The creation of the GSA in 2019 provided a detailed, strategic plan, allowing the Town to further its dedication to both sustainability and resiliency.
